So no going to the National mall on Ian’s first fireworks display. Considering that Ian’s not a fan of loud noises (like power tools used to saw up wood for his fort), and considering the hassle it is to get downtown, we decided to go to the garage at Ballston Mall to see the fireworks. Sadly the top level of the garage was closed (lame), so we watched from the level below that with some other folks.
The national fireworks display was still an awesome show from way over in the middle of Arlington. You kinda miss out on the bang and ka-thumps (but this year that was part of the plan). However, you do get to see other local fireworks shows while you wait for the main event. Once the national fireworks start, you realize just how big they are. Many of the fireworks are bigger in diameter than the Washington Monument is tall. It’s very impressive!
Ian did great, and was clearly very excited. Before the show Ian had mentioned how he “makes” fireworks at school. This consisted of throwing mulch at the fence and yelling “fireworks”. Clearly the real thing is a bit more impressive. He compared them to volcanoes erupting. I think he might have been a bit nervous as he kept saying “They’re just fireworks” (vs. volcanoes).
Maybe next year we can get just a bit closer!
